What major would help me going into law school?

I am thinking about going for International Law and wondering what major would best get me ready for that. Right now, I am thinking of majoring in Communication, or double majoring in both English and Communication, and possibly double minoring in French and Spanish (which should be easy since I'm fluent in both languages. However, would it be necessary or even helpful?)

Also, what should I be focusing on to be ready for law school? Any tips? (I am 19, and a Junior in College)

Thank you so much! I hope you can help.

Poli-Sci

College students who are going to law school usually major in something law-related like Political Science, Government, Economics, or Philosophy. But a law-related major is NOT required: many law students also major in other things that interest them, like Biology, Math, or Music.

Law schools do not require any specific college courses (unlike med schools which require a lot of math and science courses), which is why most colleges do not have a specific "prelaw" major.

The most important 2 things for getting into law school are your LSAT score and your GPA. For the LSAT, it helps if you take some philosophy and/or reasoning classes in college--or you can just take an LSAT prep course from PowerScore or Kaplan.

For GPA, obviously you want a high one. What this means is that you should probably major in whatever you are most interested in, so that you will work hard and get good grades. Law schools care much more about the grades you earned, than what major you earned them in.

It really doesn't matter much. At my law school, there were a diverse amount of majors. I hardly saw any political science majors. I think the smartest thing is just to major in something you are genuinely interested in. That way, if you decide not to be an attorney, you have something to fall back on. I'd probably go with Communications out of what you have listed. You do a lot of public speaking in law school. On the other hand, if you major in the languages then you will have a great gpa since you are fluent. This will help you get into a good law school. (btw: being multi-lingual is a great asset for an attorney)

The most popular major for law school is political science but there was even a music major in my class. Since you are looking at international law, you might consider diplomacy. The undergraduate classes I found most useful in general for law school were English and business classes.

I spoke to an attorney who told me that while he was interviewing for law school - they like to see majors other than polical science because they want some diversity among the students. He was a history major. I think the majors you have are perfect.

Have you taken the LSAT yet? I would really recommend taking one of the prep courses if you can. I know they are expensive, but everyone I know that has not taken one has not done as well.

Good luck!
