What kind of law enforcement work does the coast guard do?

I'm planing on joining the coast guard a was wandering what kind of law enforcement they do? I know they bust drugs and all that but what else. I really want to go around and bust drugs and board ships but I don't know any of the terms. Also what would be the requirements for those kinds of jobs? How high would I have to test on the asvab test.

First of all the Coast Guard does use the ASVAB. Second, the type of LE you do really depends on what type of unit you are at. Every job in the Coast Guard can do LE. There are MK's, OS's and FS's on my units boarding team, anyone who completes the qualifications can become a boarding team member.

Any kind of Maritime laws. They enforce things such as having the correct number of life jackets on board, fire extinguishers, boating under the influence, immigration.... under the Department of Homeland Security, the CG role is expanding. The CG works closely with other agencies, such as Border Patrol.

I'm not sure about the asvab scores, pretty middle of the road I'd guess. Bos'n Mates run the small boats which have a role in law enforcement, but MST is the rate to go for if you really want to be strictly in the LE side of things.

They dont take the ASVAB, they are part of the Department of Transportation now Homeland Security.
