What is the law regarding changing lanes without a blinker?

Is it simply breaking the rules of etiquette, or is there an actual law regarding it?

(I never do it; just curious. It's a pet peeve of mine.)

Depending on the state, here in Arkansas it just went into effect a few month ago and yes they are enforcing it to the max plus when they stop people they also whip up on DWI warrants and drugs any thing they want to, the only down fall it they can say you didn't use a blinker just to stop you and yes they do I hang with a few cops and that's also how they have made drug bust , JUST BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T USE A SIGNAL.just like our safety road blocks there looking for dwi's

Swerving is the offense committed when changing lanes without a blinker.

i believe it was a law to communicate to the other driver your intentions to move . the blinkers let each other know what you will do . at stop signs / four interestection ... it gets difficult ... i have given many right of ways .. hand signald and driver acknowledges ususal hand signals thanked thanked by visual in addition to blinker just to be sure that i stayed out of a accident .

i believe communication does help safety .

i have idea but i imagine this is a a law . i was stoped by a police and fined 50 dollars ! for using my bright lights on a forest/ dark road i did not know that had no lighting . i could not see. felt it was the best judgement to turn them on . drivers are asked to make judgement calls everyday and step up and do the right thing. i can't understand / comprehend reconile the matter today. I believe i have legal obligation to control my car . i can i control if i can't see / communicate .

In cop talk it's called "improper lane usage", and it will get you a ticket, usually.

It is a ticketable offense (failure to signal).

In most (if not every) state, it is a defined offense. Failure To Signal. There are enough infractions to keep the cops busy so I don't notice them writing tickets for it. But if someone does change lanes without a signal, and they've cut another car off, a cop may ticket them for failure to signal, rather than go through the hassle of proving unsafe lane change, or reckless driving.

Almost forgot, it's a traffic infraction so the penalty is a fine.

Yeah, its annoying, I get offended when someone doesn't have enough courtesy to let me know they are changing lanes. Its lousy, dangerous driving.

Yes, I believe one gets a ticket for improper lane change. The penalty is dependent on jurisdiction. It's a pet peeve of mine too, I wish it was enforced more regularly.
