What is the law on using a camera phone to record someone without consent?

Someone has recorded my friend singing however we have only just found this out as its on you tube and he feels very uncomfortable with this. I know he can contact you tube and get it pulled probably but what is the law on this? just curious??

Many thanks for the help

One answer states, "It is against the law to film or photograph a person without their consent. "

Well, can you show me the statute that covers that? You can't, because it is not against the law to photograph someone in public. If it were unlawful to take photos of someone without consent, every paparazzi in Hollywood would be doing some time in jail every time they took a picture of anyone.

The other answer that suggests going to YouTube online to find out how to file a complaint is a good idea. The invasion of privacy issue would be a civil matter in court, not a criminal one. You have no legal right to expect privacy in a public place.

I think that anything that you do in public can be recorded and become the property of whoever has it. Unless it is libelous or can be proved to be harmful which does not include embarrassment. Many companies and police departments video you now without your knowledge.

It is against the law to film or photograph a person without their consent. They have a legal right to make a case of it. If the person is part of a general picture that you are taking then that is ok.

That is called invasion of privacy. You can go to your tube web site there will be instructions on how to contact the company by certified postal mail filing a complaint for removal of such posting.

If in UK there is no law you are free to photograph or record anything you like.

Invasion of privacy....
