To be a truly successful LEO I think the list could almost never end. As one had commented little to no intelligence need? I'd say hardly so the ability to effectively communicate incidents is incredibly important to ensure that a crime has detailed and thorough statements. Plus when dealing with charging people you are talking about many statues and laws that require your knowledge of.
I think though in addition to at least average intelligence you need to be physically fit, mentally sane, and have high integrity. Also though LEO's get a lot of crap so I think you also need to have the ability to take some things a little more lightly and still have some fun. There are many things that can be negative about the field so its important an officer can find light things to enjoy and just laugh about sometimes.
This is just some of the traits I have noticed through some of the ride alongs I have done with officers in different agencies.
Critical thinking skills. (You know. The ones you rarely see examples of here.)
Ability to stay calm and keep thinking under stress.
High, I mean TOTAL, commitment to honest ethics.
They'll teach you the skills. It's the abilities you need to bring with you.
Be able to climb fences, shot a shot gun and run. Shooting guns is the typical skill desired. Educational skills is not a factor. Be get Maced a few times with tear gas, then shoot your gun at a bulls eye.
The ability to lie in a courtroom & to convince the jury it's the truth.
