What law are you breaking if you use a pirated serial number?

I'm just curious as to what law is broken if you use a "Pirated" serial number for a software program.

don't know of a law against it expect stealing software licenses partly since those keys wernt previusly perchased

so many people around the world do it that I have not seen one person get in trouble for it kind of like copying a vcr tape

Basically it's theft. Something like shoplifting, you're taking something without paying for it. If you are caught you can be sued by the company and even serve jail-time.
